In February 1980, AC/DC singer Bon Scott died. At first, continuing as a band felt anything but obvious.
Yet Angus and Malcolm Young decided to keep working. With Brian Johnson as the new singer, AC/DC travelled to Compass Point Studios in Nassau, the Bahamas, in April.
Grief without making a slow record
The conditions were far from ideal: tropical storms and technical problems made the sessions difficult. But together with producer Mutt Lange, the band built songs that sounded extremely simple and precise.
Hells Bells opens almost like a funeral ritual. Then come riffs that barely need explanation: Shoot to Thrill, You Shook Me All Night Long and, of course, Back in Black.
The black cover became a restrained tribute to Scott. The music chose not silence, but volume.
