Adele – 21 | Heartbreak everyone understands

Adele named her second album 21 after the age at which she wrote many of its songs. But the real story of the record is a relationship that had just ended.

She arrived at songwriter and producer Paul Epworth’s studio angry and heartbroken. From that session came Rolling in the Deep, a song much harder-edged than people expected after her debut.

From private heartbreak to millions of listeners

For the rest of the album, Adele worked with several producers, including Rick Rubin. Yet the core remained the same throughout: no complicated concept, just songs about separation, regret and anger.

Someone Like You showed how little you sometimes need. A voice, a piano and a melody were enough to silence entire rooms.
