The best-known song on Back to Black grew out of a conversation that was never meant to become a song.
People around Amy Winehouse had suggested she go to rehab. Her response became the core of Rehab. Producer Mark Ronson heard the story and realised there was a song in it.
A modern record with an old soul
For much of the album, Ronson worked with the Dap-Kings in New York. The band could play the dry drums, horns and soul grooves of the 1960s convincingly without making it sound like imitation.
Winehouse placed painfully modern and personal lyrics over that sound. Her break-up with Blake Fielder-Civil provided material for several songs, including the title track.
