For AM, Alex Turner changed the way he wrote songs.
Instead of starting on the sofa with an acoustic guitar, he had the band play grooves while he listened through a simple four-track cassette recorder. Over those rhythms, he searched for melodies and lyrics.
Rock with hip-hop underneath
Turner later said he wanted the drums to give the same feeling as a good hip-hop record playing in a car. You can hear that in Do I Wanna Know?, R U Mine? and Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?.
Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age dropped by during the sessions, drank tequila with the band and ended up singing backing vocals on Knee Socks. AM became rock music that learned to move like R&B and hip-hop.
