Daft Punk – Discovery | A vision of the future that still works

For Discovery, Daft Punk looked not only to clubs, but also to the television of their childhood.

Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo were major fans of Japanese anime. For the visual story surrounding the record, they therefore worked with artist and director Leiji Matsumoto, known for works including Galaxy Express 999.

An album became a film

Every song was given a place in the same continuous animated story. The project eventually appeared as Interstella 5555, which barely needs dialogue: the music of Discovery tells the story.

Musically, Daft Punk also approached dance differently. Samples from disco and soft rock were chopped into tiny pieces and rebuilt. On One More Time, Romanthony’s heavily processed voice became part of the futuristic sound itself.
