Future Nostalgia was designed for packed dance floors. As the release approached, the exact opposite happened: in March 2020, much of the world went into lockdown.
On top of that, the album leaked online early. Dua Lipa decided not to wait for months, but to bring the record forward instead.
Disco in an empty living room
The contrast could hardly have been greater. Songs such as Don't Start Now, Physical and later Levitating drew on disco, funk and eighties pop while clubs were closed and concerts disappeared.
Yet it worked. Behind the scenes, the concept had been set long before the disco revival: Dua Lipa wanted to make modern pop that looked toward her musical heroes without becoming retro.
