Fleetwood Mac had already existed for years before Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joined. Yet the 1988 Greatest Hits collection focuses almost entirely on the period from 1975 onward.
That was a deliberate choice. The compilation centres on the line-up that made albums such as Fleetwood Mac, Rumours, Tusk, Mirage and Tango in the Night.
Not the complete history
If you are looking for the early blues band with Peter Green, this record tells a different story. It is about the years in which Fleetwood Mac became one of the biggest pop-rock groups in the world.
The compilation also included new material, including As Long as You Follow and No Questions Asked. Even a greatest-hits album still looked a little toward the future.
