Few albums sound as polished while the lives of their creators were as chaotic as Rumours.
When Fleetwood Mac began recording in Sausalito in 1976, relationships inside the band were falling apart. Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were breaking up. Christine and John McVie were separating. Mick Fleetwood’s marriage was also collapsing.

Instead of keeping that tension outside the studio, it went straight into the songs. Buckingham wrote Go Your Own Way, Nicks wrote Dreams, and Christine McVie wrote tracks including You Make Loving Fun.
The remarkable part is that the people those songs were about were often standing right there, adding backing vocals or playing instruments.
