With Appetite for Destruction, the goal was surprisingly simple: Guns N’ Roses had to sound in the studio the way the band sounded live.
Producer Mike Clink therefore kept the foundation as direct as possible. Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan and Steven Adler recorded many rhythm tracks together in one room. Not everything had to be perfect; the energy had to survive.
As little as possible between band and tape
You can hear that in Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City and Sweet Child O’ Mine. The record has enough studio polish to hit hard, but never so much that the rough edges disappear.
When the album arrived in 1987, the breakthrough was not immediate. But once the singles started to grow, Appetite for Destruction went from a raw debut to one of the defining rock albums of its generation.
