After his first solo album, Harry Styles wanted Fine Line to be less about expectations and more about the feeling of the songs themselves.
Part of the album was made at Shangri-La, the legendary studio in Malibu. With regular collaborators such as Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson, he created a record that sounds much looser than his debut.
From rock star to a sound of his own
Styles drew on soft rock, seventies pop and psychedelia, while keeping the songs personal. Falling sounds fragile, Adore You warm and Watermelon Sugar almost carefree.
That contrast became the heart of the album. Fine Line is simultaneously about falling in love, distance and relationships ending, without ever becoming heavy-handed.
