Information Society began in Minneapolis, but their early club success came unexpectedly from New York. The track Running found its way onto dance floors in the Bronx and eventually helped the band toward a major record deal.
Pure Energy
What's on Your Mind (Pure Energy) became the song that would define the band. Its most famous detail is not even a synthesizer, but a voice.
The words “pure energy” come from Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock in Star Trek. Other Star Trek fragments were also used in the track. Permission had to be secured for those samples, making science fiction literally part of the record.
In 1988, What's on Your Mind became a huge US hit. A synthpop band from Minnesota was suddenly on the radio with a futuristic club track featuring Mr. Spock.
