Jacques Brel – Ne Me Quitte Pas | When a voice is enough

Ne Me Quitte Pas is often played as one of the great love songs of the twentieth century. Jacques Brel himself saw it in a much darker light.

He wrote the song after the end of his relationship with actress and singer Suzanne Gabriello. The melody was developed with pianist Gérard Jouannest, while François Rauber created the arrangement.

Not a declaration of love

The narrator begs someone not to leave and promises to make himself smaller and smaller. Brel did not see that as romantic heroism, but rather as the humiliation of someone willing to give up everything to avoid being abandoned.

He recorded the song in September 1959. It then began a second life: artists around the world recorded their own versions, and Rod McKuen wrote the well-known English adaptation If You Go Away.
