The connection between Rye Lane and composer Kwes began before he officially wrote the soundtrack.
During development, director Raine Allen-Miller created a temporary playlist to establish the film’s mood. According to her, roughly ninety percent of it consisted of older music by Kwes.
A soundtrack that was already inside the film
When Kwes later received the rough cut, he heard his own earlier work playing as the temporary score. That made it easier to connect with the film’s colourful, playful world.
Rye Lane is set in South London, where Kwes himself comes from. His electronic and sometimes dreamy music therefore became more than neutral background; it became part of the place itself.
It was his first major film score and earned him a British Independent Film Award.
