James Murphy had already spent years working as a producer and DJ before he suddenly became a frontman himself.
Losing My Edge began as a half-joking, half-painful response to the feeling that younger people in New York’s music scene were starting to overtake him. Instead of hiding that insecurity, he turned it into LCD Soundsystem’s first single.
The producer becomes the band
At the same time, Murphy was working with Tim Goldsworthy as DFA on other artists, including The Rapture. For his own debut, he often stayed in the studio late into the night. He later said that for a long period he practically lived there.
That helps explain why LCD Soundsystem sounds both loose and obsessive: dance music made by someone who wanted to control every tiny sound.
