Metallica – Metallica | Heavy without unnecessary excess

After the complex songs of ...And Justice for All, Metallica wanted something more direct. For their fifth album, they brought in producer Bob Rock.

It was not a comfortable choice. Rock constantly challenged the band on arrangements, sound and performance. Recording dragged on for months and the collaboration was regularly tense.

Fewer notes, more weight

Instead of playing even more complicated material, the riffs became simpler and heavier. Enter Sandman, Sad but True and Nothing Else Matters were given space to breathe. The drums and bass also became far more massive in the mix.

When Metallica was released in 1991, it took the band to an audience far larger than the metal world alone.
