The most famous song on Nevermind got its title from a joke that Kurt Cobain initially misunderstood.
Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill wrote on a wall that “Kurt smells like Teen Spirit.” Teen Spirit was a deodorant used by Cobain’s girlfriend at the time. Cobain did not know the brand and thought the phrase sounded rebellious or revolutionary.
A strange phrase becomes a worldwide hit
The words stuck and became the title of Smells Like Teen Spirit. Nirvana recorded the song with producer Butch Vig at Sound City Studios in California. Vig helped the band capture its raw energy without losing the melody.
DGC expected success, but not what came next. The video played constantly on MTV and Nevermind grew into one of the albums that defined the 1990s.
