The cover of (What's the Story) Morning Glory? looks almost accidental: two men crossing paths on a quiet London street. Yet for Oasis, that simple image became one of the most recognisable album covers of the 1990s.
The photograph was taken at dawn on Berwick Street in Soho, then lined with independent record shops. In the foreground, Oasis art director Brian Cannon and DJ Sean Rowley cross paths. Further back, producer Owen Morris appears with the album's master tapes.
Hundreds of photos, no screen
In 1995, the shoot was still done on film. Cannon later said they took hundreds of photographs without being able to check the result instantly. Shooting early helped keep the street almost empty before London woke up.
That is what makes the sleeve so strong: no band portrait, no oversized logo, no spectacle. Just two figures passing each other among record shops. A simple street photograph that eventually became almost as recognisable as Wonderwall itself.
