Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of the Moon | Listening as if time stands still

One of the most famous openings in rock history actually began outside Pink Floyd.

Engineer Alan Parsons had recorded a range of clocks in a clock shop for another project. When the band was working on Time, those recordings turned out to be perfect. The ticking and ringing clocks became one of the most recognisable moments on The Dark Side of the Moon.

The voices arrived almost by chance too

For the short spoken fragments scattered across the album, people at Abbey Road Studios were asked questions about subjects such as fear, violence and death. Staff and visitors therefore literally ended up on the record.

And then there is The Great Gig in the Sky. Singer Clare Torry was played the music and asked to use her voice as an instrument. The almost wordless vocal became one of the album’s emotional peaks.
