Prince – Purple Rain | The song that was born live

Purple Rain sounds as if it was always meant for a huge stage. In a way, it was: an important part of the album was not born quietly behind studio doors, but in the middle of a hot, packed club night in Minneapolis.

At a benefit concert at First Avenue, Prince and The Revolution performed songs including Purple Rain, Baby I’m a Star and I Would Die 4 U for the first time. The live recordings were developed further in the studio, but the energy of that night remained in the finished record.

From club night to worldwide hit

The title track in particular kept evolving after the show. Extra arrangements and studio work were added, yet Prince kept the long build and the feeling of a genuine live performance.

That may be Purple Rain’s greatest strength: it sounds huge and cinematic, but underneath it all you can still hear a band playing together in one room. More than forty years later, that is why the record still feels alive.
