Isles in Indigo literally began by the sea.
RUMTUM, the stage name of John Hastings, spent two months in Hawaii studying the coral reef around South Kona. During that period he made music with samplers and a Tascam tape recorder.
From tropical reef to mountain home
When he returned to the US mainland, he brought back mostly saturated, rough recordings. Those imperfect tapes were not discarded; they became a defining part of the album’s character.
The songs were later developed further in a house in the mountains of southern Colorado, during the global lockdown. Hastings later described it as a strange time to finish such a colourful album, but that was exactly why it also worked as a form of escape.
