For KALAK, Sarathy Korwar did not begin with a melody, but with a different way of drawing time.
The drummer had already been experimenting with his own notation systems. While developing this album, he started writing rhythms not from left to right, but in circles.
Yesterday and tomorrow in the same word
The word kal can mean both yesterday and tomorrow in Hindi and Urdu. Korwar turned that into KALAK: a palindrome that reads the same in both directions.
That idea of circular time became the basis of the record. Korwar connected it with South Asian ideas about past, present and future, as well as his research into Indo-futurism.
Even the graphic symbols on the cover come from his own notation system.
