1989 (Taylor's Version) is an unusual record because its story really begins nine years earlier.
With the original 1989 in 2014, Taylor Swift deliberately committed fully to pop. She worked with Max Martin, Shellback, Jack Antonoff and Imogen Heap, among others. For Clean, Swift went to Heap’s studio; according to Heap, the vocal was recorded in only two takes.
The same songs, a different owner
Years later, Swift decided to re-record her first albums after the masters of her older catalogue changed ownership. That project eventually brought 1989 back into the studio too.
The new version was released on 27 October 2023, exactly nine years after the original. Alongside the familiar songs, it also included previously unreleased “From the Vault” tracks.
That makes it more than a remake. You hear the same compositions, sung by someone almost a decade further into her life and career.
