When Within Temptation started work on Hydra, they had one important rule: as few rules as possible.
Sharon den Adel said around the album’s release that the writing process flowed surprisingly easily because the band no longer wanted to lock itself into a single style.
Why a rapper suddenly appears
That explains the guest list. Tarja Turunen, Howard Jones, Dave Pirner and rapper Xzibit all come from completely different musical worlds.
At the same time, the band brought back elements from its own past. Heavier guitars and even growled vocals returned, alongside electronic and cinematic production.
Some songs started as ballads and were later rebuilt into faster, heavier tracks. The name Hydra was therefore fitting: many heads, but one body.
